Phelps is located on the south shore of Lac Vieux Desert and the western shore of North Twin Lake. Crystal-clear Lac Vieux Desert is the source of the Wisconsin River.
The history of Phelps goes back to the fur trading and logging days of the 18th and 19th centuries. The Military Road was built there in the late 1800s. Today, Phelps is a growing, forward-looking community with an abundance of natural resources for visitors to enjoy. Don’t miss the Phelps Historical Museum, which tells the stories of the families of the area.
When you visit Phelps, you can leave the stresses of everyday life behind. Nestled in the beautiful Nicolet National Forest, Phelps boasts four seasons of outdoor activities, including fishing on some of the best lakes in northern Wisconsin, snowmobiling on countless miles of forest trails or just sitting back and enjoying a beautiful sunset over the water.
Visitors can enjoy a round of golf at Big Sand Lake Golf Course. During the winter, cross-country skiing is available at the Phelps/Afterglow Lake Resort Ski Trails.
