Fat tire biking trails to try in Vilas County

Published: December 15, 2016

Fat tire biking has proven to be more than a fad, and while you can ride on any road you choose, Vilas County offers a couple of exceptional options for when you want to escape into nature on two wheels.

Near St. Germain is the Awassa Nature Trail. Here you’ll find a 1.25 mile groomed fat bike loop, meandering through a forest of oaks, maples and pine trees. You’ll share the trail with snowshoers, but it won’t ever feel crowded.

Vilas County’s WinMan Trails span 1,300 acres of public and private land in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, so you’ll never run out of beautiful places to explore. These trails are quickly becoming one of the top picks among fat tire bikers in Wisconsin. That’s thanks to expertly groomed, rolling terrain combined with fun extras like twisty turns, pump-track features, bermed corners and bridges. Lengths here vary from less than a half-mile long to five-mile loops and riders often note they’re never bored riding the pine tree-lined WinMan trails.

Don’t have a fat bike? Rent one! Chequamegon Adventure Company in Minocqua offer high-quality fat bikes with reasonable daily or weekly rates.
