Birdwatching is a popular activity in Vilas County, particularly in the fall when the leaves turn vibrant colors and migratory birds are on the move. Flocks of geese, ducks and cranes are on their way south, heading straight through Vilas County. New to birding? There’s nothing wrong with winging it, no pun intended. But it helps to have the right gear. Make sure you have some good walking shoes, and consider bringing a pair of binoculars. A birding guidebook is also a useful item to bring along. To have the most success birdwatching, it helps to head down the trail a bit. Good places to get a start birdwatching include the Fallison Lake Trails in Sayner/Star Lake, the Spectacle Lake-Kentuck Lake Trail in Phelps and the Van Vliet Hemlocks in Presque Isle.
