The Great Canoe Fiasco

Maggie E.

Boulder Junction

About 7 years ago, my dad, sister and I noticed on the maps on the table at Headwaters in Boulder Junction that it would be relatively easy to canoe from Boulder Lake to White Sand Lake. We made plans to go in the morning, and figured we would be at our destination in 3 hours, tops. We packed some light snacks and made our way out, using a flimsy paper map as a guide. We started out on the Manitowish River, and it wasn’t long until we made our first mistake and canoed into and all the way across Little Rice Lake. After searching the entire perimeter of the lake, we discovered that the only way out was the way we came in. We went back out onto the Manitowish River, and continued canoeing all the way to the dam, when we realized we had reached a dead end. Still determined to make this trip work, we turned around, and found a creek which we figured must lead to our destination. We later discovered that this creek was in fact called White Sand Creek, but at the time we could not have been the wiser. Hours later, two hungry and tired little girls had given up on helping their dad paddle through what was basically mud (the creek was dried up in some places due to a very hot summer). We were all ready to give up. My dad pulled out his phone, hoping to get some service and reach our friends and family back at the lake. Unfortunately, the phone slipped right through his fingers and into the water, and any hope that we had of contacting our loved ones was lost. We just had to keep moving forward and hope for the best. About an hour or two later, we came to a road. The only hope that we had of returning to civilization was pulling out canoe out of the creek, standing on the road, and flagging down the next car that came through. It took about 20 minutes, but FINALLY a car came through. They stopped for us, asked us if we needed help (to which we, of course, said yes) and took us back to their home. After some talking, we discovered that their daughter knew our Aunt who lives in Alaska, and they knew each other from a similar encounter that we were experiencing in the moment (small crazy world, huh?) We discovered that we nearly made it to White Sand Lake, popped the canoe back in the water, and finished our journey (that took about 6 hours longer than we had planned.) Now, every summer, my father, sister, and I do the canoe trip the right way, in an appropriate amount of time. Even though 7 years ago I thought I was going to get eaten alive by a bear swimming along the creek, looking back, that is one of my favorite memories in Boulder Junction. The photo attached is of our most recent outing on the creek, but this time in a kayak.

Growing Up [North]

Jen W.

Eagle River

School’s out and that means it’s time to head to Eagle River where I would spend a majority of my time. The cabin shaped me into the person I am today, my love for the outdoors and my independence was embedded in me as I would spend my days exploring with my best pal, a yellow lab named Casey, roaming side by side (I’d share my secrets with her because she never told anyone!). Picking raspberries along the dirt road, jumping off the dock into the Chain O’ Lakes, and sitting by a fire at the end of the day with my family was how we liked to spend our time. As I grew up, my time spent in Eagle River decreased but my love for the serenity of the Northwoods grew stronger. Once I headed to college it went from months up north to weeks. Now that I’ve graduated I look forward to my annual Daddy and Daughter week at the cabin. No memories are more special to me than fishing with my best friend, who still puts up with my fear of taking the fish off the hook 23 years later! This photo is my dad and I fishing on the chain from a few years back. Our smiles say it all, nothing beats a good day fishing. My cabin will always be my second home no matter where life takes me.

I had so much fun biking all the trails that I came back in September and had another 4 day biking vacation. The Manitowish Waters Bike Trail is the best trail I’ve ever ridden. It is stunning. I have already made plans to come back next June for a week of biking. I can’t wait to get back up there and enjoy all the beauty.

Presque Isle

One of my favorite moments was my son’s very first trip to Presque Isle. We stayed with family on Oxbow Lake. Daniel was 4 and wanted to fish but had never casted a line. He practiced for a long time before adding frog bait for weight. Within minutes he caught his first fish. He was so proud, he did somersaults and had to call everyone back home to tell of his success. He was later able to catch a few more and was thrilled! Upon returning home, he spoke to someone about his “big” fishing trip. Daniel shared that he was a great fisherman however just kept catching the same one fish over and over! I will always remember the expression on his face and the great day at the lake that day.

Lac du Flambeau

On March 11, 2016 I surprised my boyfriend Chris with a trip to Lac du Flambeau for his birthday. It was his first time ever in the Northwoods. This photo of me was taken at Squaw Lake – we stayed at the Birch Trail Resort. We made a fire every night. Watched the stars light up the sky. We saw several bald eagles & even a coyote walk across the frozen lake the morning we were leaving. He wants to move up north now (YES!). We ended up hiking around the Chequamegon National Forest. It was breathtaking! I love the area. It was really fun showing my boyfriend the beautiful lakes & land that Vilas County (and the rest of the Northwoods) has to offer.

A 30 year dream coming to life!

Kevin M.

Boulder Junction

My moment starts just over 30 years ago when my family and I started vacationing in St. Germain and Manitowish Waters in beautiful Vilas County. Over those years, I have developed family memories over 4 generations – through my father, grandfathers, and in recent years, to my two sons as well.

We have enjoyed water sports, fishing, biking and four-wheeling in nearby locations, and have always dreamed of owning our own place. Unfortunately, my grandfathers and my father have passed away, however we are finally making this dream a reality after many years of searching!

Attached is a photo of myself, Kevin, (age 42) and my two boys, Ryan and Ethan (14 and 11, respectively) at our new place in Boulder Junction, on Wild Rice Lake, of the Manitowish Chain of Lakes.

Not only are we excited to have purchased this property, but we are also even more excited to build our dream home as we have plans with Everest Builders in Minocqua to start construction in June.

Everyone we meet tells us the same story, which we already know, which is “You’re going to give your boys the best gift they ever could receive; memories of spending time together in Northern Wisconsin.” I agree and know my father would be so proud of this opportunity with his grandchildren.

Our story has just begun – there will be so much more to tell!

We enjoy all the local fishing spots, boating, shopping, eating and drinking and so much more! The wildlife and the peacefulness really make us love Vilas County!

The fish of 370,000 casts

Jeff M.

Eagle River

They say the muskie is the FISH OF 10,000 casts. Well at the age of 47 and 370,000 casts later, I finally caught a muskie worth bragging about. It was a miracle that I landed this 48-inch monster. I was fishing out of a pontoon (never easy), on an ultra light pole with 6 lb. test and a mister twister bait. I have been going up north since the age of 10 and have continued the tradition with my children. We let the muskie go, after a few photos, with the hopes of the future that my kids’ kids will have the chance to land a once-in-a-lifetime fish like this one.

Fishing the Deerskin

Dennis N.

Phelps

Some of the best memories I have (going all the way back to early childhood) have been in Vilas County and in particular in and around the Phelps area. Fishing the Deerskin for a few trout is always a wonderful way to reflect on and recall earlier memories as well a wonderful way to take in the beautiful, peaceful environment that is the Northwoods. If a few trout are caught (which is usually the case), it’s just an added bonus.

No better way to end the day

Boulder Junction

My grandparents took me up to this special Vilas County lake every summer. I almost feel like I grew up there from the age of 4 until I was about 16 when I started working. Aside from one trip with my grandparents when I was around 20, about 25 years had passed since I was last at this beautiful lake. Then I was blessed with the opportunity to return to the same cabin all these years later. The memories that were made at this lake and in Boulder Junction and Land O’ Lakes are etched in my mind forever. The sunsets that I have seen on the lake over all those years have been nothing short of amazing. I am so grateful to be able to retrace my young footsteps at this place. Without a doubt, my favorite place on Earth.

Teaching the importance of the release

Doug P.

Minocqua Area

While fishing with my two sons in central Vilas County, I was able to catch a very nice musky. After some quick pictures, I placed the fish back into the water. My sons asked why I was letting the fish go (confused because we had harvested a few walleyes earlier in the day). I told them that we don’t keep most of the fish we catch, only a few, and we never keep muskies, no matter how big or small. They asked why? My reply was simple – so some day you two, or someone else, can catch her again and be able to enjoy what we just did. We want to preserve these fish as best as we can. Foundation has been established.

Grandpa Zdralevich’s place on Rest Lake

Becky V.

Manitowish Waters

Joe Zdralevich ( my grandpa) had a awesome place in rest lake. When he passed, his 3 kids thought it would be best to sell as it was expensive to upkeep. They all still ran Merichkas Restaurant in Crest Hill, IL. Now that we grandkids are grown and have our old families, I really miss it. We had ski boat, fishing boats, snowmobiles. Lots of lakefront, wet boathouse. Probably worth 10x what they got for it. I have dreams I sneak in there when the new owners are gone. (I would never do that!) Lots of great memories. Learned to water ski, snowmobile from bar to bar, went horseback riding , Jim Peck’s wildwood, had deer feeders. So much fun my kids will never experience. The pic is me from the late 80’s.

Land O' Lakes

I’ve been coming up to Land O’ Lakes since I was born and my 89 year old mother has come up since she was 4. There are so many memories that are awesome. I think being able to sit on a pier, on a summer night around 6:00, with the sights of loons sitting on the lake, diving in the water and trying to guess where they will pop up next. The eagle soaring overhead. Maybe a glimpse of a mother doe and her fawn taking a drink from the lake. And then there’s the sounds. The frogs, the loon calls, the whip-poor-wills. I could go on and on, but those moments are the ones cemented in my brain.

The Eyes Have It

Howard L.

Conover

My 16-year-old daughter was fishing by herself in a boat in front of our pier at the Maple View Resort on Pioneer Lake in Vilas County. I taught her to bring the lure alongside the boat when finishing each retrieve and saw that she was doing exactly that. My friend and I were on the pier and were loading our boat for a few hours of fishing. At this time, I heard my daughter start the outboard motor of her boat and saw that she was headed for our pier. Apparently, she was done fishing for a while, but I soon saw that she was coming in way too fast. She never throttled down and ignored the fact that I was yelling at her to slow down. She drove the boat onto the shore and a birch tree finally stopped her forward momentum. Completely ignoring my concern, my daughter jumped out of the boat and ran for the safety of our cabin. As she passed me, she yelled in a completely terrified voice, “EYES…TEETH…NO MORE!!!” After she calmed down, I learned that a huge musky followed right behind her lure with its mouth open as she finished her retrieve alongside her boat. As a long time musky fisherman, I wonder to this day just how big that musky was.

My fishing snag that wasn’t a snag

Tim M.

Eagle River

My son, dad, and I were fishing on the Eagle River chain on a beautiful fall day. We were catching some fish, but also getting our lures hung up on some logs from time to time. I pulled back on my rod only to exclaim that I was hung up again. My son said, “Uh, Dad, your line is moving sideways.” So I gave it another pull and the big fish pulled back, took off on a run, and battled for several exciting minutes before Dad got him in the net. Just one of many memories from up north we like to talk about. Of course, they often hassle me about not being able to tell the difference between a snag and a fish.

My largest walleye ice fishing

Shelly J.

Presque Isle

My husband and I were at our cabin in Vilas county for a long weekend. He was planning to do some ice fishing and catch the Packer game at a local bar.
Friday night we went to Gooches 2 for a great fish fry and to see some old friends and the new building.
We fished a small lake Saturday morning and caught a few perch. Around noon we took a drive to decide what lake to fish Sunday. My husband has a few favorites and I guess he picked the right one. On our way back to our cottage we stopped at the Burnt Bridge near Conover and watched the Packers. Great time and great people to enjoy the game with.
Sunday afternoon we packed up and headed to the lake we chose. There was about an hour and a half before sunset so my husband was in a hurry to get all set up. Before we had all of our tip ups in I had caught a few nice perch, all out of the same hole.
While jigging, my line broke so my husband tied a new hook. The flag popped up on the same tip up as earlier, I was sure it would be another perch.
As soon as I felt the pull I knew it was something better. As the head came into the hole I was in shock. Just as I pulled it up the line broke. So I had to grab it before he went back in.
That is the largest walleye I have ever caught through the ice.

We love Vilas county!

Eagle River

I’ve been vacationing in Eagle River with my family every summer for more than 30 years. A few years ago my husband and I decided to visit in January. We had never gone snowmobiling so we rented a snowmobile in Minocqua and headed back toward Eagle River. We’ve always loved going to the dam on Dam Lake in the summer so made that our destination. Imagine our thrill when we arrived to catch this awesome picture of the sunset. One of our favorite locations is just as beautiful in the winter as it is in the summer!
