In Vilas County, you’re never far from a trailhead that will lead you somewhere special. You’ll find some of the most scenic trails in the Northwoods of Wisconsin here—they will lead you through ancient stands of hemlock, past sparkling lakes and through tranquil clearings. Here’s a quick look at some of our favorite spots.

Catherine Wolter Wilderness Area

The Catherine Wolter Wilderness Area can’t be beat for a wilderness experience for winter silent sports. This 2,189-acre preserve is home to 15 wild lakes and it’s an ideal place to explore by snowshoes or ski. In the spring, Catherine Wolter turns into a breathtaking hiking destination. St. Germain-Eagle River-Lac du Flambeau loop

With 700 miles of snowmobile trails, the riding options are nearly limitless around here. In southern Vilas County, a nice ride is the route between Lac du Flambeau, St. Germain and Eagle River. In Eagle River, you’ll find yourself in the heart of the snowmobiling world—Eagle River hosts a season full of snowmobile rides, races and more. Madeline Lake Trail

In the Minocqua Area, the Madeline Lake Trail offers some nice hiking options with trail loops ranging in length of 3 to 5.5 miles. There are some nice look spots to take in Madeline Lake, including a scenic lookout. The lake is particularly beautiful in the morning when the water is still.

Heart of Vilas County Paved Bike Trail

For a paved Northwoods bike path, you can’t beat the Heart of Vilas County Paved Bike Trail System. It will take you through some spectacular scenery as you travel through Boulder Junction, Manitowish Waters, Sayner-Star Lake and St. Germain. As you ride the east shore of Trout Lake south of Boulder Junction, keep an eye on the sky—it’s a good place to spot bald eagles. Get more biking ideas here.
