When it comes to winter sports, Eagle River has lots to brag about.

Not only is it officially known as the Snowmobile Capital of the World® (it’s home to 500+ miles of trails and the World Snowmobile Headquarters), Eagle River also has another title—Hockey Capital of Wisconsin™.

Why is that? Well, Eagle River is home to the Pond Hockey National Championships, held every winter on the community’s frozen lakes. Each year, the Eagle River Fire Department creates 30 rinks for the tournament, which has welcomed hundreds of teams and thousands of competitors from across the country.

It’s also home to the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame, which has made its home at the Eagle River Sports Arena since 1975. The hall of fame honors 69 inductees and contains memorabilia from these honorees and Wisconsin’s hockey history.

The Eagle River Sports Arena has its own history, too—built-in 1933, the iconic dome was designed to promote winter tourism and was constructed by local volunteer carpenters. The structure is on the Wisconsin Registry of Historic Places. A second Olympic-sized rink was completed in 1995-96.
